Making it in Canada

CHAPLI KABAB

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, I share 3 of my our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

One of the most important ingredients in my recipe was beef. My beef came from a local Canadian farm. While the USA is the largest producer of beef, Canada ranks 9th in production. In 2016 alone Canada produced 3 billion pounds of beef. My beef was from a cattle farm in Ontario. Ontario accounts for about 7% of Canada’s beef production.

The second ingredient that was important in my recipe was the tomato. One the largest producers of tomatoes is China. My tomatoes came from Canada. Since it was the off-season for tomatoes, they were produced in a greenhouse.

One major component of my recipe was cilantro. My cilantro came from India, one of the largest producers of cilantro. According to the FAO Canada started producing cilantro on a significant scale after 2001.

In summary, 8 of the 13 ingredients I needed are produced in Canada, while the other 5 can be purchased without much difficulty.
